| Born
in Geneva (Switzerland), François Giacobino lives and works
in St-Sulpice VD (near Lausanne). An engineer by profession, in
1986 François Giacobino decided to give free rein to his
creative sensitivity by launching his own publicity company, based
on the use of slide shows. Then, in 2000, having acquired a passion
for glass after meeting Yan Zoritchak, he embarked on his training
in France : first in Lorraine, home of such great glass artists
as Antonin Daum, Emile Gallé, René Lalique, and
such mythical crystal glassworks as Baccarat, Hartzviller, St-Louis
and Daum; subsequently, in northern France, at the Atelier du
Verre at Sars-Poteries with one of the great contemporary master
glass artists, Antoine Leperlier.
Although
it is in the precision of his engineer’s training that François
Giacobino finds the source of his inspiration, it is from the
very depths of his sensibility that he draws his taste for the
delicate scrolls, revealed by the play of light. His exceptional
and powerful works, with their pure shapes and glistening colours,
are brought to life by a ray of sunshine, disclosing sensual curves
and playful bubbles.
While learning about the
mysteries of solid crystal, its heating and very slow cooling
requirements, he instinctively rediscovered his liking for manual
work and artistic design, buried since childhood.
Poured
into very simply-shaped heat-resistant concrete moulds, the molten
glass of varied colours is flecked with touches of enamel, creating
sails, clouds and turbulent waves with poetic effect. After removal
from the mould, the very carefully polished crystal retains rough
areas, lending the pieces their lifelike and unique character.
